Residence tax is a tax that every resident in Japan, regardless of their nationality, pays to their local municipal office. You must pay this tax if you have an address in Japan as of January 1st and your income is above a certain threshold.

Those who pay by themselves (General Collection) will receive a payment slip from the municipality of their residence in June, so make sure to pay by the due date. Those who work for a company and have residence tax deducted from their monthly salary (Special Collection) do not need to pay the tax to the municipality themselves.

Our center has created a multilingual leaflet about the residence tax which explains payment methods, procedures to be followed when leaving Japan, any effects on residence status procedures, etc. Please check it out!
