When you give birth or raise a child in Japan, there is a variety of benefits and leave that you can apply for. However, the criteria and application process for each can be complicated and difficult to understand.

In addition, eligibility for the child allowance available to those raising children has changed significantly following a revision of the system in October 2024.

With this in mind, we have created a multilingual guide outlining the kinds of leave and benefits available, the child allowance system and amounts, the application process for each, and some examples. The guide is based on information from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Please check it out.
