 ■Health Insurance
・In Japan, there is public insurance with medical benefits that aim to compensate treatment expense and lost salary during medical leave.
・There are two types of health insurance; one is health insurance designed for company/business employees, the other is national health insurance for those not covered by the former type. After paying a set premium, presentation of your health insurance card allows you to pay only 30% of the total expense.
・If the expenses incurred at a medical institution exceed a certain amount in one month, you may also receive high-cost medical expense benefits.

 ■Hospitals
・In Japan there are two types of medical institutions: large and well-equipped general hospitals, and clinics for everyday illnesses and injuries.
・Most hospitals and clinics operate on a first-come-first-served system, instead of taking appointments, so sometimes the wait to see a health professional can be very long.

■Emergency first-aid during night hours and holidays
・If you fall ill or are unexpectedly injured during night hours or holidays, you may go to an emergency medical center or local hospitals on duty (hospitals subject to change) for first-aid treatment. Check your municipality’s homepage or free paper(s) for more information.

■Medical Interpretation
・he number of medical institutions capable of managing foreign languages is limited. If you do not speak Japanese, it is thus recommended to be accompanied by someone who speaks Japanese, or to use a Multilingual Medical Questionnaire. Depending on your region, there may also be a local international exchange group that offers interpreting services. In case of an emergency, please consult the consulate general or consulate of your home country/region.
